NEW LOOK: Schenectady Amtrak station taking shape across from new casino, slated for fall

SCHENECTADY, NY (WRGB) NYSDOT officials say the new Amtrak station in Schenectady is just months away from completion.

It’s one piece of a city revitalization plan a county legislator says is 15 years in the making.

The new station is taking shape on Erie Boulevard. We got a look at the progress so far.

“We’re pleased with the progress. It’s moving on time, and on schedule,” said NYSDOT spokesman Bryan Viggiani.

Renderings show what the new station is expected to look like, with space for commuters to wait indoors.

Right now, the front of the building is starting to resemble the renderings, and steel is going in on the platform.

“They’re working on the headhouse now, which is the part of the station you encounter when you come off the train, the entryway into the station,” Viggiani said.

Viggiani says the old Amtrak station that was demolished last summer, was built in the 1970’s.

“It had reached its time. Schenectady deserved a nice, more modern station here,” Viggiani said.

The new station will mirror the classic look of an even older train station from 108 years ago.

“It’ll have modern conveniences, but will also harken back to the old 1910 built Union Station that used to exist in Downtown Schenectady.

Viggiani says the 23 million dollar project is expected to be finished this Fall. Part of a city plan 15 years in the making, to transform Erie Blvd.

“It took us a longer time to get it going than I would’ve liked, but the governor was a big help in terms of finally putting that package together,” said Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy.

The new train station is going up on Erie Blvd. not far from the Rivers Casino and the new Riverhouse apartments coupled with new restaurants and offices on the Mohawk riverfront.

“The train station is really just the cherry on top of the sundae there,” said Schenectady County Legislator Gary Hughes.

Hughes says Schenectady commuters can also look forward to a faster trip when the Amtrak station opens, due to a second train track installed between Schenectady and Albany.
