River, mountain views selling points at Mohawk Harbor apartments
For decades, rusting industrial buildings hid the view.
Now, that view of the Mohawk River and the mountains beyond is a major selling point for the apartments at Mohawk Harbor.
As the first apartment building nears completion, 30 percent of the apartments are already spoken for, Galesi Group CEO David Buicko said during a tour Thursday.
“This is going to be a game changer for the Capital Region,” he said, as he pointed out to a reporter where open-air amphitheater seating would be built and where Druthers Brewing would open a new brew pub.
A bicycle and walking path will run along the river’s southern shore.
Apartments on one side of the building offer a river and harbor view through floor-to-ceiling windows, while those on the other side look out on Schenectady. In the distance are Ellis Hospital, Union College’s Nott Memorial, and the Golub Corp. headquarters.
“It’s easier to sell Schenectady to people from out of the area than to those from Schenectady,” he said. “We’re a little behind the times in terms of the urban environment.”
But the project, and the nearby Rivers Casino and Hotel, together represent a half-billion-dollar investment, Buicko said, gambling that a walkable neighborhood and gleaming architecture will prove attractive to both millennials and empty-nesters.
The casino wasn’t part of the project. It wasn’t even planned when Galesi bought the 60-acre parcel on April Fool’s Day in 2010, Galesi said.
