Mohawk Harbor Marina manager named

SCHENECTADY — Mohawk Harbor has named a manager for its marina and is preparing to open it for its inaugural season.

Brian and Kathy Donovan, who own Donovan’s Shady Harbor Marina on the Hudson River in New Baltimore, will run the new facility on the Schenectady waterfront.

And it won’t only be for powerboats: The marina will offer kayak rentals on site, starting Memorial Day weekend.

Kathy Donovan said on Wednesday that the new marina’s season will be timed to the navigation season on the Mohawk River, because when the locks aren’t operating and the water level is lowered, traffic is greatly reduced. However, she said, boaters just operating locally could dock at Mohawk Harbor Marina for a dinner visit — at 12 feet, the marina is deep enough for most boats even when the river is lowered.

However, the navigation season — May 18 through Oct. 10 this year — is expected to be the marina’s busy time, Donovan said.

“You have boats that travel from the Great Lakes to the Hudson River, the Hudson to the Great Lakes,” she said.

The 55 dock slips will be available for daily and seasonal rental, though fees have not been finalized. A handful of slips will be designated for free use by boaters visiting briefly for dinner.

A launch ramp, fuel, water, pump-outs and repairs are available nearby but not on site.

The Galesi Group, developer of the roughly $500 million Mohawk Harbor project, said the 60-acre site and nearby parts of the city are an attractive stop for boaters passing through the region or a good destination for boaters based in the region.

Galesi CEO David Buicko said there are several options at Mohawk Harbor for dining and entertainment, with more coming and many more a mile or two away. There are two hotels and a casino on site, and a bike-sharing hub and trolley service make it easy to get downtown without a car.

Rather than undertake marina management itself, Buicko said, Galesi turned to the operators of the well-regarded marina south of Albany to run the new facility in Schenectady.

Donovan said fees will be finalized shortly, and rental inquiries can be emailed to marina@mohawkharbor.com.
