Mohawk Harbor developers pleased with progress

SCHENECTADY – Work continues at the Mohawk Harbor Project in Schenectady. At the Electric City Innovation Center Thursday, the development company gave local leaders an update on how the construction project at the five-acre area that ties into the casino, downtown, and the greater Capital Region.​

“There’s a lot happening in 2017 and it’s all coming together very nicely,” said David Buicko, the president and CEO of the developer, the Galesi Group.​

Buicko says the site was raised five feet above the flood plain and will be a stop for boaters along the Erie Canal and the amphitheater. He anticipates the apartments and office building can be done by July and the townhouses by the fall.​

“We’re creating something that’s never been done in the Capital Region. You’re creating a mixed-use urban environment for people to live, work, eat, play and we just don’t know how deep the market is yet,” said Buicko.​

He’s been getting calls from around the state and some spots in Massachusetts to come see what has been built and what is still to come.​

They are tapping into Proctors and the 650,000 people attracted there for shows annually. CDTA will provide trolley service in the near future.

​The harbor has been a $500 million investment.

​”You had to almost go backwards to go forwards,” said Buicko.​​

The site now known as Mohawk Harbor was once the location of ALCO, the American Locomotive Company. It sat vacant since 1969 before the Galesi Group got involved seven years ago. That anniversary date is actually coming up a week from Saturday, April Fool’s Day.
