Galesi to Redevelop Former Social Services Building
Galesi to Redevelop Former Social Services Building
Posted: 7/15/2011
A former social services building in Schenectady, New York, next to the headquarters of Price Chopper Supermarkets, will be converted to corporate-style apartments by a private developer, officials said.
The Galesi Group of Rotterdam plans to redevelop the building at 487 Nott St. and seek to have it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was originally the Nott School, dating back to 1875.
Renovations will not begin until after the building receives historic designation.
In recent years the building served as the main office of the Department of Social Services. It became cramped and in need of costly repairs. County government wound up moving the DSS to a building at the other end of the city, in a deal with the Galesi Group.
The Galesi Group has agreed to lease the former DSS building for $200,000 from the Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency, with an option to purchase.
The IDA bought the building from county government for $200,000. The deal closed Thursday, county officials said.
The project is the latest for the Galesi Group in Schenectady.
The company developed the $30 million headquarters of Price Chopper, which is owned by the Golub Corp, and is pursuing a large redevelopment of the former American Locomotive factory property nearby along the Mohawk River. Galesi also has properties downtown and on Broadway where the new DSS headquarters is located.
