Developer releases sketch for Hudson Avenue complex

GLENS FALLS – Developers of a multistory mixed-use complex on Hudson Avenue are moving forward with construction, even though they have been unable to recruit a supermarket as an anchor tenant.

“We’re looking at all opportunities. We’ll see on that one,” said David Buicko, chief operating officer of the Galesi Group, referring to hopes of recruiting a supermarket.

“Supermarkets tend to be very specific in terms of their demands,” he said.

The Galesi Group of Rotterdam, in partnership with Bonacio Construction Inc. of Saratoga Springs, is developing the six-story complex planned for the parking lot at the intersection of Hudson Avenue and School streets, in the parking lot between Glens Falls Hospital and Pizza Hut.

City officials still hope to recruit a supermarket, if not at the Hudson Avenue complex, for somewhere in downtown, said Mayor John “Jack” Diamond.

“Maybe the opening right now is not going to occur. But we want to be positive about it,” he said.

Apartments on the upper floors of the Hudson Avenue complex, once leased, will create more demand for an eventual supermarket somewhere in downtown, said Councilman at-Large Dan Hall.

Bonacio Construction and the Galesi Group on Monday released a sketch of the proposed complex.

“This design really helps connect the hospital with the city’s core,” developer Sonny Bonacio said in a news release.

The complex would have retail and commercial offices on the ground floor, commercial offices and apartments on the second floor, and apartments on the upper floors. There would be 90 apartments in all.

Buicko said he and Bonacio are in negotiation with a number of potential retail tenants.
