CTDI to expand, add more jobs in Glenville

GLENVILLE — Communications Test Design Inc. was only able to move employees into its new Glenville location a few months ago, but already the global repair vendor is planning to expand its local footprint.

In January, CTDI announced it would invest $11.4 million in a 130,000-square-foot facility in the Glenville Business and Technology Park and create 150 new jobs in the community. The Pennsylvania-based company provides repair and logistics services for the communications industry, servicing cable providers, Internet companies and telecom carriers from 70 facilities worldwide.

Construction began on the local facility last year, before the deal was ever official. The Galesi Group began building a 151,000-square-foot facility next to the Old Dominion site based on its interest. Construction wrapped in July, and today 126 of the 150 planned hires occupy 130,000 square feet of leased space inside.

On Wednesday, local officials announced the company will expand into the remaining 21,000 square feet and create an additional 20 jobs for 170 local hires overall.

“It’s a major win for our county to pick up a large employer like this,” said Ray Gillen, chairman of the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority.

Metroplex is providing a $175,000 grant to assist the company’s new operations center. CTDI was also enticed to the area with $800,000 in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits from the state. They are also seeking a $250,000 grant from National Grid to help offset the costs of running gas and electric service to the new building.

“CTDI’s expansion in Schenectady County is great news for the region,” said Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Kenneth Adams in a statement issued Wednesday. “We applaud CTDI for its continued commitment to growing in New York and creating even more jobs, and we thank all the supporting partners involved in bringing this company to the Capital Region.”

The privately held company has global headquarters in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Although it has a few facilities in the Northeast, CTDI last year began seeking out a new place to put a regional operations center. As soon as Schenectady County got word, economic development officials began working overtime to nab them.

“We heard they were looking and we zeroed in,” said Gillen. “It was a very aggressive multistate competition. Everybody worked together as a really seamless team on this project. It’s really something we’re all really proud of.”

It took the town of Glenville just 28 days — a record low — to move the project through the local approval process.

Not only was the Glenville location strategically located in the Northeast with nearby access to major thoroughfares, but it also allowed CTDI to offer a new service program to one of its customers, said Paul Cardell, vice president of corporate operations.

“The facility is world-class and we have had very good success in recruiting the skilled staff from the local market that we need to effectively run the operation,” he said in a statement.
