SCHENECTADY — One of the state’s first three commercial casinos will be located in the city of Schenectady, but officials say the benefits will be spread across the region.

Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy is working with neighboring communities to provide employment opportunities throughout the Capital Region at Rivers Casino and Resort at Mohawk Harbor.

The casino project, headed by the Galesi Group and Rush Street Gaming of Chicago, was recommended by the state Gaming Facility Location Board for a casino license Wednesday. It is projected to create 1,400 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs.

The casino, slated to be built on the former Alco site, beat out local proposals in Schoharie County and the city of Rensselaer, as well as a third pitch by Saratoga Harness Racing in East Greenbush.
