Tayler Malsam, the #19 G-OIL Toyota and TriStar Motorsports teamed to make NASCAR history at the DRIVE4COPD 300, the opening race of the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Malsam parlayed a disciplined race strategy, some deft accident avoidance maneuvers, and great pit work by his Eddie Pardue led TriStar Toyota crew to claim a sixth place finish in the biggest race of the 33 race Nationwide season.
The event marked the first time that bio-based engine oil has been used in NASCAR competition. The G-Oil -Tri Star-Toyota teams combined to be the top Toyota in qualifying and lead laps (#44 Mike Bliss) and be the top finishing Toyota with Malsam’s sixth place in the 300 mile, 120-lap event.
“Daytona was a great kick-off for G-OIL,” said Jeffrey Loch, President, and CMO of G-OIL parent company Green Earth Technologies, Inc. “We have won races and a championship in American Le Mans Series, and we came here to prove that our bio-based full synthetic G-Oil can perform in NASCAR engines and competition,” said Loch.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we are all happy,” said Malsam. The 23 year-old native of the Seattle area is in his first full season of NASCAR Nationwide Series competition. “We took a very conservative approach and never drafted in practice, in the race, you needed a partner to draft. We helped push two or three different cars after re-starts, but as soon as we moved them up, they dumped us and we would fall down the order. The TriStar crew did a great job and Rick Carpenter (general manager) and Eddie stayed with the game plan and dealt with the damage when we got clipped trying to get through one of the big crashes,” said Malsam.
“We exceeded our expectations,” said TriStar general manager Rick Carpenter. “We are a small team and having the fastest Toyota in qualifying; leading the race and having Tayler bring the G-Oil car home sixth and be the highest finishing Toyota in the race in our very first race together is a tribute to everyone involved. We leave here with Tayler and the G-OIL Toyota carrying some extra momentum heading to Phoenix next week.
